femmealunettes: (born to the age of panic.)
The terrible secret of LiveJournal.

I just... never really thought about it like that? And it's kind of a sobering thought.

Yeah. Anyone fannish: read it.

Haha, yeah, I love how pissed off someone got in the comments before they realized that. xD

I read it. While the author has some valid points, scrolling the comments brought up some major contradictions. I honestly think that if someone were to attack LiveJournal because of fanart, the case would be dissolved. The internet is just so much of a grey area these days that until precedents are set, there is no telling where the law stands on these things.

Also, I think LJ should set its priorities. In the long run, who is fanart hurting? It's not exploiting anyone like real child pornography. They should be going after things that could potentially harm others. Real child pornography. Other illegal matters that could be harbored on LiveJournal. But going after fictional stuff? It's kind of unnecessary at this point.

But I can understand LJ wanting to cover themselves to avoid legal battles. However it would have been nice if they had contacted the user beforehand instead of just suspending them.

Oh, I definitely agree with the fact that LJ's priorities are all out of order, and that they should have given some warning before suspending users.

Still, I also appreciate the situation that LiveJournal is in, legally. And the author's also right about fandom's inflated sense of entitlement.

I mean, it's obvious that LJ's going about things all wrong, and that they'd be doing better actually banning harmful things opposed to gheyfanartsecks, but (aside from respect and forewarning) there's not much more fandom can ask them to do, I don't think.

Oh totally! I think there were some unreasonable demands being thrown around on both sides. I just wish LJ would get their act together and stop hurting their own business by hurting their customer base :\
