The [livejournal.com profile] zacharyq_stills results for the Spock challenge were posted.

Three of my four entries did not get a single vote.

....yeah, I don't think I'll be entering icontests ever again.

Which ones were your entries? Do you want some constructive criticism? I can try to help you improve as much as I can so you might actually get more votes \o/ (but don't get discouraged with icontests. it's sometimes not about how good your icons are at all but how much they follow the current trends :\)

I know 2 isn't that good, but I thought the other three were okay... :/

For the first icon, I think you should definitely drop the glitter texture as it just clutters up the icon. the text + the image is enough and anything more will make the icon look too busy. The coloring makes the skin quality look a little sickly, which is generally not a good idea in icon-making. Try to go for a coloring closer to your third one. You can experiment with different colorings, but make sure that the skin still looks decent!

The second icon is way, way too dark and the skin looks blue! I think this would actually be a good image to do a black & white/grayscale icon with.

The third icon is actually pretty decent, but the text. I would choose a different font or make it a little bit easier to read. I generally avoid using any text at all on icons that are zoomed in that close because the crop usually speaks for itself. The coloring is really nice though and I don't think you need to do anything with that.

For the above three icons, I also would lose the black border.

For the last icon, I think you should either keep it so that it's the two images alone or lose one of the images and keep the text, but not both. The icon looks way, way too busy otherwise. Also the two different colorings in the smaller and bigger image makes the icon look sort of detached. The smaller image doesn't seem to go with it. The image quality looks a little blurry, too, but I think it might be fine if you get rid of the other image (which is sort of distracting the more I look at it).

My motto in icon-making is keep it simple. Once you can make a perfect simple icon then try to add effects. I find that it's a lot easier to add effects one by one then to figure out how to get rid of them once you've got the finished icon sitting in front of you.

See, usually I just crop and go, but that sort of icon gets absolutely nothing at contests...

The first one was supposed to look green... Spock's a Vulcan and their skin is copper-based. Which is too fucking nerdy and obviously no one but me was going to know that, so yeah.

The second one was a B&W picture to begin with...

The third one... like I said, usually I don't bother with text or anything.

And the fourth one... ah, I just hate the fourth one. I should have tried these out at a Trek contest and not the Quinto one, because I think it's pretty obvious that I was the only Trekkie there. *facepalm*

Also, is the border really a bad thing? I put the border on everything I male.. the only reason the fourth one doesn't have it is because I forgot. ^^;

Thanks for the advice!

Yeah, cropping and going isn't really icon making at all, it's just making bases, which is totally awesome! but requires little effort D:

oh lolol I'm a horrible Star Trek fan >_> I think maybe if you had removed the sparkly layer then the coloring would have worked because I think that layer draws your eyes to the green a little too much.

Oh see I don't know what the original pics look like so I was just critiquing the icon alone D:. I think b&w pics are hard to turn into color. Maybe in the future rather than turning the skin blue, try to turn it into a more natural color (or the green skin that Spock is supposed to have). The blue is just doubly unnatural D:

Yeah the third one would have been perfect as just the crop minus the border.

Yeah I think 95% of the fans there are there mainly like him for his role on Heroes and have never watched any ST in their lives. Blasphemy.

I think that borders are sort of unnecessary on most icons. Like the one that I'm using looks much better without a border. I don't know what it is about the border but I just find that it makes it look less professional? I don't know.

No problem ♥ You can also try posting to [livejournal.com profile] icon_feedback to get more advice if you want. They're really good at delivering concrit and some of the iconmakers might be a bit more experienced than me.
